During the 2008 recession, boat manufacturers shifted from producing 100% 19-foot "ski boats" to 20-foot "family boats."
These longer boats, equating to greater volume, consequently became much heavier. In order to achieve 36 mph / 58 km/h, the transition was made from using 5 or 5.3-liter engines to 6 and even 6.2-liter engines.
The increased volume, weight, and these bigger engines result in higher fuel consumption. Notably, boat prices have doubled in less than 10 years, averaging $110,000 USD.
Alahua Boats has completed its first prototype: "pista" – a 100% ski boat that is 20% lighter.
Featuring several innovations, the "pista01" is centrally steered for an enhanced track experience with room for the pilot and two passengers. It incorporates dual side-mounted gas tanks for improved balance, enabling quicker acceleration and reduced wake.
The boat operates at 400 rpm less than competitor boats, resulting in approximately 20% longer engine life and reduced fuel consumption.
